~ Student Spotlight May 2008 ~ Codi VanAtta & Kathy Benson These 2 women are so much fun and full of life. We ate lunch at Cantaberry Restaurant & Catering and then took a walk down River Street as they shared with me. It was such a pleasure getting to know them a little better. This is what I found out: Codi VanAtta… Codi moved here from Florida 25 years ago. She earned her BS in Criminology with a Psychology minor and worked as a parole officer in Florida. When she moved here the rules were different and the system said she would have to work as a prison guard for a while before she could be a parole officer and well, she decided that was not what she had envisioned herself doing when she went to school. Instead, she went into the landscaping business, creating a business named Brooks Greenhouse which specialized in growing culinary herbs for Atlanta Culinary who distributed their herbs to high-end restaurants all over the Atlanta area. The business closed upon her divorce. Today Codi works as an Agriculture Inspector and, get this, her title is “the Grower”. She checks out the health of local plants and also checks in on our sweet friends the honeybees. Thanks Codi! Codi has studied herbs and is pursuing more coursework in the field to become an herbalist. She intends to make this her career in the not too distant future. How fortunate for us and the whole community! Codi lives in Jasper on 20 wooded acres and is currently building a mini barn for her 2 horses. Here’s what Codi says about her experience of yoga: Yoga challenges me to really be in the moment. When I am focused on what we are doing, I can’t get into negative self talk. Yoga has helped me with my body image and taught me to respect my body. I feel more like my body is part of me and I’m not looking at it as if it were a separate entity. I feel good about what I can do. |

Kathy Benson… When I asked Kathy about her life, her first response was "I was born at a very young age…" a testament to her wonderful sense of humor. Kathy moved here from Atlanta 2 years ago and though the transition was a little rough, she has become hooked on the way of life here away from the city. One of the first things she noticed was that “it really gets dark here!” Kathy works at home (they call her a “pj person”) for Sun Micro Systems as a program manager. When she is not on the computer Kathy maintains a small business called Jumping Mouse Designs. She has a home studio where she does lampworking and makes glass beads. Her work is amazing! She gifted me one of her pieces of which I am ever grateful: a very small and beautiful vessel filled with sands from the mandala made by the Tibetan monks when they visited Atlanta. Studio tours and lessons are available. She began her art with Native American beadwork and was commissioned to make a bag for Kareem Abdul Jabar! She has also been featured on ETC3’s “She’s So Crafty” show. Her work will be available for sale and viewing at the Blue Ridge Arts Festival on May 24 & 25. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet Kathy and see her work! Kathy’s yoga experiences: My aches and pains from working on the computer have gone away and I feel stronger both inside and out. MEDITATION Group Open to new members: Kathy, Codi and another friend, Kathy, have started a meditation group and it is open to any one wanting to join in. It is non-denominational with a focus on relaxation, breath work, stress reduction and manifestation. It is held on Thursdays at 6:30 PM in the Coosawattee River Resort. If this sounds interesting to you contact Kathy at 706-635-1960 for more details. |
